SUMMARY

The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) presented its draft contingency plan for the 2001/2002 rainy season on December 13, 2001 for expert review. The plan, which identifies the population that is potentially vulnerable to floods, cyclones, or drought, is expected to be completed by late December.

Due to above-normal rainfall in the Southern Region of Mozambique and in neighboring countries, the Limpopo, Umbeluzi, and Incomati rivers are nearing flood alert levels. The Limpopo River rose above alert levels on December 12-13, 2001.

JOHANNESBURG, 17 December (IRIN) - Heavy rains in southern Mozambique have virtually made the city of Inhambane inaccessible by road, Radio Mozambique reported at the weekend.

Inhambane is about 360 km northeast of the capital, Maputo. The report said that torrential rains in the area had swollen local rivers and made the only road into Inhambane impassable.

Mozambique has been hit by two consecutive years of flooding. The flooding at the beginning of this year affected more than 500,000 people.

UMCOR is continuing to support the efforts to provide the people of Afghanistan, both those who are refugees and those who remain within the country, with the resources they need to survive the winter. In spite of the difficulties of working within Afghanistan, an assessment team from the UMCOR Tajikistan office is in northern Afghanistan assessing needs and establishing a distribution system for shelter kits, household kits, and hygiene supplies.

Johannesburg (dpa) - Disaster management authorities in South Africa and neighbouring Mozambique have been placed on alert as heavy rains cause the water levels in dams and rivers to rise.


Dams in Gauteng and Mpumalanga were being monitored on Wednesday while locals have been warned to be on the lookout for flooding caused by sudden thunderstorms, the Citizen Newspaper said.

Water had on Tuesday been released from the Vaal and Bloemhof dams which each reached capacity, the report said.

Maputo (dpa) - Fears of fresh floods in southern Mozambique mounted Thursday when the region's water board authorities forecast heavy rains in the following two weeks.

The Southern Region Water Board (ARA-Sul) sounded alarm bells by announcing that due to continued heavy rainfall, the Pequenos Libombos dam, south of the capital of Maputo, would have to increase its discharge rate in order to hold more water during the rainy season.
