MORE than 150 000 Mozambicans - mostly peasant farmers - are facing devastating floods for the second time in 11 months following the opening of sluice gates on the Kariba Dam in neighbouring Zambia.

Mozambique is still recovering from massive floods in February and March, which killed 700, destroyed the homes or livelihoods of more than 10% of the country's 19 million people and did about $1bn in damage, according to World Bank figures.

ANGOLA: Rebels attack Benguela airport
UNITA gunmen on Thursday attacked a heavily-guarded civilian airport serving the southern port city of Benguela, one of Angola's largest cities, AP
reported. UNITA fought a two-hour gun battle with security troops before kidnapping two guards. The airport lies only 20 km away from the government army's main military base at Catumbela and about 400 km south of Luanda.

Benguela's airport was severely damaged during the attack and two planes were hit, witnesses said. UNITA, engaged in a 25-year war with the MPLA

Maputo (AIM) - Mozambican Prime Minister Pascoal Mocumbi on Thursday said that the government has approved a "Contigency Plan" for any possible natural disasters caused by floods and cyclone for the 2000/2001 period.

Speaking at a Maputo press briefing, Mocumbi said that the weather forecasts already published mention a strong probability of rains above normal in some of the country's regions.

Rome, 21 December 2000 - Some 28 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are facing severe food shortages as serious food supply problems persist in a number of countries, mainly because of prolonged drought and civil strife, according to a report released today by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The situation is most critical in eastern Africa, where 20 million people face serious food shortages that will require continued food aid well into 2001.

Record rainfall in November has raised concern over the threat of serious floods this season in the northern provinces of Nampula and Zambezia and the southern provinces of Maputo and Gaza. Concerns are even greater in Maputo and Gaza where soils remain saturated as result of last season's flooding. Households along the Rios Maputo, Umbeluzi and Incomati are already at risk of losing their assets due to rising water levels.
