SITUATION

1. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT CO-ORDINATOR REPORTS THAT CYCLONIC WINDS WITH SPEED OF ABOUT 100 KM/H STRUCK SOUTHERN MAPUTO PROVINCE ON 26 MARCH. MAIN ELECTRICITY SUPPLY FROM SOUTH AFRICA TO MAPUTO CUT OFF. MAPUTO IS NOW ENTIRELY DEPENDENT ON STAND-BY THERMAL POWER STATIONS. REPAIR OF MAIN POWER LINE WILL TAKE AT LEAST THREE MONTHS.

2. IN LOW-LYING AREAS MAPUTO CITY, WATER ROSE ONE METER ABOVE STREET LEVEL, FLOODING WAREHOUSES, FACTORIES, HOMES, DESTROYING STOCKS OF GOODS, DAMAGING INFRASTRUCTURE (ROADS, CANALS UNDER CONSTRUCTION, PHONE AND POWER LINES).
