The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today announced a further $2.55 million in funding to help address the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state and its impact on neighbouring Bangladesh.

As friends of Myanmar, we are deeply concerned by the humanitarian situation in northern part of Rakhine State. We have welcomed the Government’s agreement to allow a resumption of humanitarian assistance and initial deliveries to some villages, but we are concerned by delays and urge all Myanmar authorities to overcome the obstacles that have so far prevented a full resumption, noting that tens of thousands of people who need humanitarian aid, including children with acute malnutrition, have been without it now for nearly two months.

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, along with the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, today announced new programming to help build inclusive democratic governance in Burma and improve opportunities for the country’s most vulnerable people.

The announcement, totalling $44 million, occurred during Minister Dion’s three-day visit to Burma.

218 agencies participated in the March 2016 3W, providing information on their activities in 22 sectors and 158 sub-sectors which have been defined by technical/sector working groups. Currently the 3W reporting is quite comprehensive for projects of INGO, UN and Red Cross agencies, but there is still likely to be under-reporting of the specific activities of field-based local NGOs and CBOs.
