EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION

Rakhine State, located in western Myanmar, is home to roughly 3.2 million people. Compared to the rest of the country, Rakhine State is relatively underdeveloped. The majority of the population are Buddhists from the Rakhine ethnic group; in addition, nearly three in ten people are Muslim.

Key Findings

Kayah State, Myanmar

This study seeks to provide an analysis of the prevailing socio-economic environment in Kayah State, highlighting livelihood status/opportunities for local populations, whilst providing an appreciation of the gaps in skills and knowledge of the refugees residing in the two temporary shelters in Mae Hong Son Province, Thailand in terms of accessing livelihood options on their potential, voluntary return to Kayah State.

Existing protection referral pathways and the CCCM complaints response mechanism form the foundation of this report. DRC seeks to verify concerns reported to the extent possible and share information with the relevant sectors/agencies for further action.

Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is exploring ways to return to delivering assistance in Rakhine State after riots last week forced most of the humanitarian community to withdraw staff and halt operations. The organization already has staff members in the area to evaluate the situation.

Myanmar // Kachin State

Danish Refugee Council recently took part of a United Nation lead cross line mission into one of the hardest to reach areas of Myanmar. The main purpose for the UN was the distribution of food and assessment of needs, and DRC took this opportunity to conduct needs assessments - focusing primarily on female protection concerns. The cross line mission was the first of its kind in nearly two years that have been permitted to deliver assistance to the area.
