05 Nov 2010 description

Last Updated on Friday, 05 November 2010This year, the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar, Mr Tomas Quintana, recommended to both the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly that the UN establish a commission of inquiry to investigate allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Myanmar. However, his proposal was flatly rejected by a number of key States in the GA's Third Committee, including China and the Russian Federation. The EU pointedly avoided mentioning the proposal, reflecting the different views its members have on this matter.
