1. THE NORTHEASTERN TOWN OF LASHO, SHAN STATE, 1,200 KILOMETRES FROM RANGOON, WAS DEVASTATED BY FIRES ON 20 MARCH. FIRST REPORTS INDICATE FIRE HAS DESTROYED 2,096 HOUSES, TWO PRIMARY SCHOOLS AND KILLED 113 PERSONS. OVER 20,000 PERSONS RENDERED HOMELESS EQUIVALENT TO 20 PER CENT OF POPULATION.

2. FIRE VICTIMS TEMPORARILY HOUSED IN MONASTERIES AND SCHOOLS. ALTHOUGH FIRES NOW UNDER CONTROL, RELIEF MEASURES CONTINUING BY GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT, MINISTRY OF SOCIAL WELFARE.

UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS THAT FIRES DESTROYED 2,350 HOUSES RENDERING 20,500 PEOPLE FROM 4,300 HOUSEHOLDS HOMELESS. LOSSES FROM THE KAMAYUT FIRE ALONE ESTIMATED AT KYATS 60 MILLION, OR US DLRS 8 MILLION.

2. IMMEDIATE RELIEF NEEDS NOT YET COMMUNICATED BY GOVERNMENT.

1. GOVERNMENT OF BURMA HAS NOW REQUESTED UNDRO TO LAUNCH AN IMMEDIATE APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE TO THE HOMELESS VICTIMS OF THE RECENT FIRE.

2. UNDP/UNDRO RES.REP., AFTER A JOINT UNDP/WHO ON-SITE INSPECTION, REPORTS THAT EMERGENCY RELIEF ASSISTANCE IS STILL REQUIRED FOR 6,900 HOMELESS PERSONS LOCATED IN RELIEF CAMPS.
