Hears Update from High Commissioner for Human Rights on Work of her Office

The Human Rights Council this morning opened its fifteenth regular session, hearing an update by United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on the activities of her Office, following which it held a general debate, in which speakers addressed, among other things, the importance of protecting human rights defenders and the upcoming review of the Council. The Council also adopted the agenda for the session.

Geneva - The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria today announced that 2.3 million people living with HIV have been reached with lifesaving antiretroviral (ARV) treatment through AIDS programs it supports, a 31 per cent increase over results reported a year ago.

Somalia - Situation still precarious in Somali region

Despite record 2007 meher harvest in many parts of the country, nearly 9 million people are still expected to require food or cash assistance in 2008. Eight million of those are being targeted by the GoE's Productive Safety Net Program, an assistance program for chronically food insecure people. The food security situation in the Somali region continues to be critical.

September 2007 - Internally displaced persons (IDPs) were central to the humanitarian reform initiated by Jan Egeland, then-Emergency Relief Coordinator in 2005. It was widely recognized that the collaborative approach which had been developed to assign institutional responsibilities for IDPs was not working. Humanitarian reform was intended to "fill the gaps" in humanitarian response - particularly for IDPs -- but over time it became something else.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is pleased to acknowledge the receipt of nine new contributions totalling $138,956,623.78 as of 2 May. The contributions were made by Antigua and Barbuda ($5,000), Azerbaijan ($20,000), France ($1,263,800), Liechtenstein ($123,243.78), Netherlands ($53,300,000), Portugal ($268,540), South Africa ($240,000), Sri Lanka ($10,000) and the United Kingdom ($83,726,040). Furthermore, Pakistan pledged 20,000 for 2007.
