Introduction
This is an initial report from the Tsunami Evaluation Coalition (TEC). The TEC is a collaborative effort by aid agencies (donor governments’ aid departments, United Nations agencies, non-governmental organisations, and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement) to improve humanitarian systems by learning from the response to the earthquake and tsunamis of 26 December 2004. Another aim of the TEC is to provide some accountability for the humanitarian system to both the giving and receiving publics.

When one anniversary of Asian tsunami, the Chinese Red Cross (RCSC) held a news briefing session on its reconstruction activities in Beijing on Dec. 26, 2005. The event also represents that Chinese civil society joined the rest of the world in mourning the devastating human loss caused by the tsunami a year ago and reaffirmed its commitment to helping reconstruction efforts in hard-hit countries.

As the world remembers the first anniversary of one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters this coming weekend, World Vision is strengthening its recovery programs and reflecting on a year of many challenges and endeavours.

"This has been a year of impossibilities becoming possible, a series of minor miracles, of daunting targets and activity schedules becoming achievable and realised through the dedication of so many people.

Since last Boxing Day, millions of survivors of the tsunami have been helped by Disasters Emergency Committee member agencies. The total cost of 2005 relief and reconstruction so far was £128m - over a third of the money donated.

Chief Executive Brendan Gormley said: "On behalf of all DEC member agencies, I would like to say a big thank you to the British public for their generosity. I hope they will all have a sense of sharing in this achievement".

The DEC Tsunami Earthquake Appeal raised an incredible £372 million in donations from the British public after the tsunami.

Fighting between Karenni rebels and Burma's military junta reached its fourth this week with the Karenni National Progressive Party's armed wing the Karenni Army attacking government forces.
Gun-fire rang out on Monday as the KNPP attacked junta troops under the command of Maj. Myo Min Aung and pro-junta group the Karenni Nationalities Peoples' Liberation Front in Maw Chi township, Karenni State.

There are no reported casualties yet in the fighting, which Karenni rebels say is the fight for their autonomy.

BANGKOK, December 20 (UNHCR) - Over 140,000 refugees from Myanmar living in camps in Thailand are set to benefit from a recent decision by the government to provide broad educational services in the nine camps in the country. UNHCR is delighted by the decision under which the refugees will learn Thai and English as well as vocational skills.

On 26 December 2004, one of the worst natural disasters in living memory devastated vast swathes of South Asia. A huge earthquake off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, triggered a massive tsunami that swept away coastal villages and seaside resorts around the Indian Ocean.
