Bangladesh saw a significant increase in violence around the January 2014 elections. The increase began prior to election day (January 5, 2014), with the announcement that certain parties would boycott the elections, and continued in the months and years that followed. On election day alone, there were 20 election related fatalities reported. Twenty more election related fatalities occurred through-out the rest of January, followed by 71 fatalities related to political party violence throughout the rest of 2014. Up to 7 million people in Bangladesh need humanitarian assistance due to flooding since August. Priority needs are WASH, food, shelter, and nutrition.
In Cox's Bazar, in the southeast of the country, almost 90,000 Rohingya refugees have arrived from Myanmar following violence in Rakhine state, increasing cross-sectoral needs.
As a result of these developments, Bangladesh is now considered a situation of concern according to the ACAPS classification.
So far this year, at least 140 million people across 37 countries have been left in need of humanitarian aid. But most of them will not get it

More than 391,000 new displacements between 11 and 20 August
Bangkok, Thailand: Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) is to launch Asian Preparedness Partnership (APP): an inter-agency platform of National Disaster Management Organizations, civil society networks, and the private sector from six most disaster-prone Asian countries. The APP aims to promote regional cooperation and to strengthen preparedness for response & recovery at local levels.

The Secretary-General has the honour to transmit to the members of the General Assembly the joint report of the Special Rapporteur on the sale and sexual exploitation of children, including child prostitution, child pornography and other child sexual abuse material, Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, and the Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children, Maria Grazia Giammarinaro, submitted in accordance with General Assembly resolution 71/177 and Human Rights Council resolutions 34/16 and 35/5.
As of 18 August, 301,500 families had been affected and 44,683 displaced by flooding in 35 districts.
At least 9,850 houses have been destroyed and 383 schools are being used as temporary shelters. Crops worth tens of millions of dollars have been destroyed and over 500 industries have shut down. Search and rescue operations have completed, and the Government and Cluster partners are providing assistance including food,
NFIs, hygiene kits, WASH supplies and education materials. A total of US$11.3 million has been committed to the flood response.
UNHCR Appeals For Support To Address Refugee Resettlement Needs In Africa
The vast unmet need for refugee resettlement from Africa and the opportunities for communities to engage in the sponsorship of refugees were two of the key themes discussed when representatives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), governments and NGOs from resettlement states and other inter-governmental bodies gathered in Geneva for the 2017 Annual Tripartite Consultations on Resettlement (ATCR).
