Statelessness is a global problem - it affects half the world's countries - with an estimated 10-15 million people deprived of a nationality. The map shows the locations of stateless or at risk populations numbering 500 or more, highlighting countries with the highest concentration. The data is incomplete and contains estimates; 70% is not collected or acknowledged by the countries where the stateless live. The single largest cause of statelessness is inheritance of status, with at least 5 million stateless children and a new one born every 10 minutes.

The map shows that the countries which send and receive migrants in Asia and the Middle East all pose extreme or high risks to business of association with trafficking, according to Verisk Maplecroft’s 2015 Trafficking in Persons Index. The impact of unethical brokers is critical across the recruitment corridors in the Middle East and Asia. Labour brokers play an essential and unavoidable role in providing workers to suppliers. But, during the recruitment journey, workers – and especially foreign migrants – may become exploited, for example, by paying large fees to one or multiple brokers.

report UN General Assembly

I. Introduction

1. A significant increase in the numbers of persons of concern to UNHCR brought new challenges in 2006. While there was a 14 per cent increase in refugee numbers from the previous year, the Office's involvement, together with other humanitarian partners, in protecting and assisting internally displaced persons (IDPs) under the inter-agency cluster approach, resulted in a doubling of IDP figures. Thanks to better data capturing, many more stateless people have been identified, also swelling numbers.
