This month’s update highlights children and armed conflict concerns and provides recommendations for the protection of children in the situations of the Central African region / Lord’s Resistance Army, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Yemen and the Philippines. It includes recommendations in particular for the inclusion of grave violations against children as a specific aspect of all reports published by the UN Secretary-General on the situation in Abyei, along the Sudan-South Sudan border.

YOKOHAMA -The United Nations World Food Programme has welcomed a generous aid package totalling US$51.24 million from the Japanese Government to assist refugees, internally displaced persons and other vulnerable groups in 19 countries in Africa and Asia.

Ninety percent of the total package, US$46.24 million, is allocated to 18 African countries:

The European Commission has adopted a €160 million food aid decision targeting an estimated 18.7 million people living in regions such as sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, the Caucasus, the Middle East and North Africa. This funding decision, the largest ever launched by the Commission's Humanitarian Aid department, aims to meet the needs of the most vulnerable people facing food shortages due to natural catastrophes, economic and political crises, and armed conflicts. It is the first food aid decision for 2008.
