A total of 66,268 migrants and refugees arrived in Europe through different land and sea routes between January and August 2019, 24 per cent less than the same period last year when 87,611 sea and land arrivals were reported, 50 per cent less than the 133,390 arrivals registered in this period of 2017 and 78 per cent less than the 296,512 registered during this period in 2016.

WESTERN REGION: CALM SITUATION.

A second generation of breeding occurred in Chad while small-scale breeding was underway in Algeria, Niger and probably southern Mauritania and northern Mali. FORECAST. Breeding will decline in Mali, Niger and Chad but increase in northwest Mauritania where small groups may form, and possibly extend to Western Sahara in Morocco. Local breeding may occur in Algeria.

CENTRAL REGION: THREAT SITUATION.

The Sahel region is the perfect illustration of the interdependent link between climate change, security and sustainable development, said, Sunday in New York, minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nasser Bourita.

In a speech on the occasion of the holding of a consultative meeting of the Climate Commission for the Sahel region at UN headquarters, Bourita stressed that "the Sahel region, like the African continent, is unduly and disproportionately affected by the consequences of global warming to which it contributes almost nothing".

OVERVIEW

CONTEXT

The 26th round of DTM data collection in Libya took place between 13 June and 04 August 2019. DTM identified at least 655,144 migrants currently present in Libya who originated from more than 39 countries. Migrants were identified in all 100 municipalities, within 559 communities.
Throughout the reporting period, the armed conflict in South Tripoli which started on 04 April 2019 continued with substantial impact on the situation of migrants in and surrounding conflict-affected areas.

  1. A poor start to the rainfall season across Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Mauritania has caused significant dryness.

  2. Persisting heavy rainfall following abnormally wet conditions in July has caused flash flooding in Sierra Leone.

SITUATION. Small-scale breeding occurred in northern Mali, Chad and probably Niger. Hoppers and adults were treated (70 ha) in southwest Libya. Isolated adults were present in central and southern Algeria. FORECAST. Small-scale breeding will continue in Mali, Niger and Chad and, to a lesser extent, in Mauritania, causing locust numbers to increase slightly. Small-scale breeding may occur in southwest Libya.

SITUATION. Une reproduction à petite échelle s’est poursuivie en Algérie (115 ha traités) et a débuté dans le nord du Niger. Des groupes de larves et d’ailés se sont formés dans le sud-ouest de la Libye. Des ailés épars sont apparus dans le sud-est de la Mauritanie. PRÉVISIONS. Une reproduction à petite échelle aura lieu en Mauritanie, au Mali, au Niger et au Tchad, entraînant une légère augmentation des effectifs acridiens.

OVERVIEW

Between 1 January and 30 June 2019, some 37,100 refugees and migrants arrived via the three Mediterranean routes from North Africa and Turkey. Most crossed the Eastern Mediterranean from Turkey. Arrivals in 2019 most commonly originated from Afghanistan,
Morocco, Syria and Mali.

In 2019, 57% of arrivals were men, 18% women and 25% children.
