The two-part panel focused on ongoing threats in Africa’s so-called “Arc of Instability”, a region which encompasses the Sahel, the Lake Chad Region and the Horn of Africa.

This year, attention has shifted to the refugee exodus from Syria, even though the majority of Somalis who arrived at Dadaab last year are still there.

  • North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) airstrikes reportedly struck a military installation in Tripoli today, according to international news sources. In Misratah, news reports indicate that pro-Qadhafi forces launched attacks on a residential area near the opposition-controlled port this morning. Pro-Qadhafi forces have also intensified attacks on the western city of Zintan in recent days, resulting in an increased number of individuals fleeing into Tunisia.

La situation relative au Criquet pèlerin reste préoccupante au Soudan. Malgré les efforts en lutte du mois de novembre, des ailés ont formé de petits groupes qui se sont déplacés vers le nord-est du Soudan o=F9 ils ont pondu, tandis que plusieurs autres groupes ont traversé la mer Rouge en direction de la côte septentrionale de l'Arabie saoudite. Si de bonnes pluies tombent dans ces deux pays, les effectifs acridiens pourraient augmenter rapidement et menacer la région.

Summary

The Desert Locust (SGR1): SGR situation remained fairly calm in July and only 100 ha were treated in central Algeria. Scattered adults were reported in northern Sudan and Eastern Ethiopia and a similar situation may be present in southern Mauritania, Mali, Niger, eastern Chad, Eritrea, the interior of Yemen as well as along the Indo-Pakistan borders.

Summary

Desert Locust activities increased in western Mauritania in October. Survey and control teams from the National Locust Control Centre (CNLA) controlled second generation hoppers and adults on some 4,214 ha during this month (close to 4,280 ha have been treated since the current control operations began on September 11). Survey and control operations are in progress in Mauritania and neighboring countries are on the look out.

La situation relative au Criquet pèlerin est restée calme en septembre. De bonnes pluies sont tombées début septembre dans la majeure partie de la zone de reproduction estivale du nord du Sahel, de la Mauritanie à l'ouest de l'érythrée, mais ont diminué par la suite. Une reproduction à petite échelle a entraîné une augmentation des effectifs acridiens en Mauritanie et des traitements limités ont été réalisés.

JOHANNESBURG, October 1 (Reuters) - Locust plagues in West Africa and ongoing food shortages in southern and eastern Africa will leave millions needing food supplies in the next few months, aid agencies say.

Food shortages in some East African countries have long been endemic, but now experts say the same could be happening in the south of the continent.

Several west African countries have been hit by locusts, which have devastated local crops.
