La coopération entre les Nations unies et l’Union africaine est pour moi un vecteur stratégique fondamental pour la paix et la sécurité et le développent, non seulement en Afrique, mais aussi dans le monde parce que l’Afrique occupe un rôle central dans le monde d’aujourd’hui.

Je tiens à souligner qu’il y a un vent d’espoir dans le continent africain. Il y a un vent d’espoir parce qu’on voit, et dans le domaine de résolution des conflits et dans le domaine de la prévention, que des progrès remarquables ont été réalisés.

UNHCR's interventions at disembarkation points in Libya focus on the provision of life-saving assistance and protection monitoring, to identify persons in need of international protection, as well as vulnerable individuals, such as unaccompanied and separated children, elderly, medical cases, women at risk or victims of trafficking. UNHCR through its partner International Medical Corps provides medical services and core relief items.

Between January and June 2018, 10,404 children arrived in Greece, Italy, Bulgaria and Spain of whom 4,684 (45%) were unaccompanied or separated children (UASC). Arrival of children overall in the first half of 2018 dropped by 37% compared to the same period in 2017 (16,524).

Refugees and migrants attempting to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea lost their lives at an alarming rate in 2018, as cuts in search and rescue operations reinforced its position as the world’s deadliest sea crossing. The latest ‘Desperate Journeys’ report, released today by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, says six lives were lost on average every day.

ARRIVAL TRENDS AND FIGURES

Between 1 January and 30 November, 131,100 refugees and migrants reached Europe via the three Mediterranean routes compared to almost 171,430 arrivals in the same period in 2017. This marks a 25% reduction from the previous year’s arrival figures, showing a continued declining trend of the overall arrivals numbers to Europe. After a spike in October, arrivals dropped in November with over 10,080 people reaching Europe.

Overview

Between 1 January and 31 December 2018, 23,370 persons arrived in Italy by sea.
This is an 80 per cent decrease compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (119,369). In the first half of the year, monthly arrival numbers ranged from 1,049 in April 2018 to 4,189 in January 2018. In the second half of the year, the numbers of monthly arrivals decreased further. Notably, in December 2018, 359 refugees and migrants were recorded at landing points in southern Italy.
