• Launch ceremony of the National Strategic Review of Food Security and Nutrition on 24 November has been an opportunity for Government, UN and other partners to reaffirm their commitment to the Zero Hunger target. • The results of the Cadre Harmonisé analysis estimate that 4.1 million of people will be food insecure during the 2018 lean season, including 800,000 in need of humanitarian assistance. This is a marked deterioration from 2017. • The roll out of SCOPE, the beneficiary and transfer management platform, has started with 1,200 households.

Il ne suffira pas de fournir des armes et de l’argent pour résoudre les crises sahéliennes. Pour atteindre ses objectifs, la force doit gagner la confiance des populations et des puissances régionales et obtenir leur soutien.

Highlights

• Preliminary results of the National Food and Nutrition Survey (ENSAN) 2017 indicate that one in four people are food insecure in Mali. The food security situation has particularly deteriorated in the conflict-affected regions of Kidal, Timbuktu and Mopti and remains high in Gao.

• Long-term collaboration in the field of social protection between WFP and the Ministry of Solidary and Humanitarian Action is now formalized with a memorandum of understanding signed in October 2017.

Millet, rice, and sorghum constitute the basic staple foods for the majority of the Malian population. Millet has traditionally been the most widely consumed, but since 2005 rice has become a popular substitute in urban households. Sorghum is generally more important for rural than urban households. Markets included are indicative of local conditions within their respective regions. Ségou is one of the most important markets for both the country and region because it is located in a very large grain production area.
