Overview

Arrivals in the Mediterranean from 01 January until 30 June 2017 total 102,847 (Greece, Italy, Spain and Cyprus, including arrivals to the Canary Islands and by land to Spain). This compares to 231,075 for the same period in 2016. In the first half of the year, 9,286 persons arrived in Greece by sea (158,377 arrived during same period in 2016, a decrease by 94%).

Description of the disaster

In the afternoon of 6 August 2016, torrential rains caused tremendous flash floods in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, severely affecting inhabited areas and agricultural regions in Skopje and Tetovo. The rain’s volume was measured at a quantity of 97 l/m2 , accompanied by strong winds of around 100 km/h.

Migration trends

As of 8 February 2017, there have been 11,233 new arrivals to Greece, Italy and Bulgaria, as countries of first arrival to Europe, including more than 9,000 to Italy. This is an increase for Italy of almost one third against the same period in 2016.

UNDP Resident Representative Louisa Vinton today joined the Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs Arbr Ademi, Charge d’Affaires Toyokazu Kubota from the Embassy of Japan in Skopje, and the Mayor of Kumanovo, Zoran Damjanovski, in celebrating the reconstruction of the main road in the village of Tabanovce. The cost to repair the stretch of road was USD 173,000.

Description of the disaster

In the afternoon of 5 January 2016, the western and north-eastern parts of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia were hit by a heavy snowstorm. In the evening, the temperatures decreased to 25 Celsius degrees below zero. The mountain passes through Gostivar, Kicevo, Kriva Palanka – Kustendil put a ban on the movement of heavy vehicles, while motor vehicles were moving in difficult conditions due to the icy road conditions.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report draws on some recent operational experiences of the ICRC to describe the theory and practice of the ICRC’s approach to humanitarian assistance in protracted conflict. The ICRC spends about two thirds of its budget on protracted conflicts. The average length of time the ICRC has been present in the countries hosting its ten largest operations is more than 36 years. Protracted conflicts are a major source of human suffering and a cause of protracted displacement, migration and development reversals.

Today the European Commission has announced €150 000 in humanitarian assistance to support people affected by the recent flash floods and landslides in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. This follows EU support mobilised via the Civil Protection Mechanism for the country earlier this week.

Migrant crisis: 352 302 devices connected

SERBIA | MACEDONIA | GREECE

Present in the Balkans between September 2015 and June 2016, TSF placed itself at the heart of the migrant crisis to make internet available to those cut off and help reconnect families forced to flee their home countries due to ongoing violence and conflict. Operations were later extended to the Greek islands and mainland Greece in November of the same year, carried out alongside the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Italy

The main route remains to be Southern Italy (especially Sicily) as first entry points from the North African coasts. In 2015, according to the UNHCR,153,842 arrivals arrived in Italy by boats mainly from North African countries. In 2016, 47,820 people have arrived in Italy by sea (UNHCR- 2 June 2016).

Turkey
