In December 2015, Altai Consulting was commissioned by Save the Children’s Middle East and Eurasia Regional Office to conduct a research study on the protection of children fleeing from the Syria conflict and traveling to Europe. Fieldwork was conducted over January and February 2016 and culminated in a total of 198 interviews across 19 locations in eight countries: Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Greece, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Serbia, and Croatia.

Exposed: Abuse of migrants by state officials on Europe’s borders

Violence, brutality and unlawful treatment by authorities on the Western Balkans route are a frequent occurrence, claim refugees and migrants in a new report today.

People fleeing war, persecution and poverty describe beatings, robbery and inhuman treatment at the hands of police, border guards and other officials. In many cases, people tell of illegal deportations with state officials denying them access to asylum procedures for those seeking international protection.

UNACCOMPANIED REFUGEE CHILDREN AT EXTREME RISK IN THE BALKANS

An estimated 1,300 unaccompanied child refugees and migrants are at an increased risk of exploitation, violence and trafficking due to the restrictive border policies and inadequate social protection systems across the Balkans, 12 national and international nongovernmental organisations including the International Rescue Committee and Save the Children warn in a report released today.

Turkey’s security deteriorated further following a series of violent attacks on civilians and security forces, including a twin bombing in the capital, Istanbul, claimed by an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The average number of refugees and migrants arriving daily in Greece is at its highest since May, causing serious congestion in the camps on the islands and putting children at risk, Save the Children said today.

Arrivals to the islands during the first 14 days of August increased by 144 per cent compared to the first 14 days of July*. The island of Chios has seen one of the largest spikes in arrivals, with the daily average jumping from eight in July to 42 in August.
