SITUATION

The International Organization for Migration estimates that 350,000 refugees and migrants from the Middle East and Africa have crossed into the European Union between January and August of 2015, a significant increase over previous years. The largest group are those fleeing civil war in Syria, followed by smaller populations from Afghanistan, Eritrea, Nigeria and Kosovo.

The first Kosovar refugees of a possible 20,000 have arrived in the United States, and are being housed temporarily at Fort Dix, NJ. The United States government announced that it will provide temporary sanctuary for the refugees "until they can return home." Family members of people already living in the United States, along with some humanitarian cases, are being given priority.
