In response to the Government of Skopje's call for aid after the recent floods that have caused severe damage and displaced thousands, especially in the rural areas of Skopje and Tetovo, the Italian Foreign Ministry has allocated 200,000 euros in emergency aid to the ICRC (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies).

Italian Development Cooperation has decided to allocate further multilateral emergency funding of 250,000 euro to help the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia tackle the refugee emergency. Most of the large numbers of refugees entering the country are from the Middle East, and travel along the “Balkans Route”. The new Italian funding is intended to support the initiatives envisaged under the special intervention plan launched by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in response to the migration crisis in Europe and the Balkans.

Conclusions

The Contact Group met at ministerial level on 11th April 2001 in Paris. This meeting took place at a significant moment for the future of the Balkans. The Contact Group reaffirmed its determination to continue playing its full role in the interest of stability and security in the region.

Democratic changes in the region, particularly in Croatia and in the FRY, represent major steps forwards. Such progress must continue respecting international borders, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
