While the crisis in the Balkans remains severe and uncertain, Catholic Relief Services continues to address immediate needs of refugees and host communities as well as plan for the eventual refugee return to Kosovo. Bombs continue to rain on Serbia and the political tension is at an all time high since the War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague has indicted Yugoslav President Milosevic and four other top Yugoslavian officials.

As the conflict in the Balkans rages on, Catholic Relief Services is providing for both the short-term and long-term needs of hundreds of thousands of refugees. Relief efforts in Albania, Macedonia, Bosnia and the Yugoslav republics of Montenegro and Serbia are straddling the daunting task of providing enough food and basic supplies to refugees while addressing the real psychological trauma facing the fleeing Kosovars. Below are highlights of this week's activities.

Baltimore, March 30, 1999 - As tens of thousands of refugees flee continued fighting in Kosovo, Catholic Relief Services is distributing food and hygiene packs to those crossing into Macedonia. Meanwhile in Albania, where an estimated 90,000 refugees have fled, relief workers are reporting even more critical needs. "The influx of refugees has been overwhelming," said Charles Juhn, a representative for Catholic Relief Services in Albania.
