ALBANIA

Aapproximately 100 fires started burning in the week 18 - 23 July, affecting approximately 1,500 hectares of forest near the city Kukws in northern Albania (National Park of Valbone, near the border to Kosovo (forest of Germenj) and near the Greek border.

Albania sent a request for international disaster assistance on 23 July at 17:00 UTC, asking for aerial fire fighting capacities, because the use of standard fire fighting equipment is ineffective, since the disaster area is mountainous.

NATO's Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre has passed on to NATO and Partner countries requests for assistance from Bulgaria, Albania and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1).

The urgent requests are for specialized firefighting aircraft and helicopters to help fight a wave of forest fires that has struck the countries.

The Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) is a "24/7" focal point for coordinating disaster relief efforts among NATO member and Partner countries.

The people of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia1 voted yesterday in free and democratic legislative elections. These elections, held in a generally peaceful environment, were largely conducted in accordance with international standards. Across the whole country, large numbers of citizens from all ethnic communities voted. In doing so, they strongly expressed their will to take an active part in shaping their common future.
