The European Commission (EC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have launched an initiative to increase disaster prevention in cities across seven countries and territories in the Western Balkans.

The two-year project, to be implemented by UNDP in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo*, Montenegro and Serbia, will equip municipalities to reduce the risks associated with flash floods, earthquakes, droughts and other disasters.

Flash flooding and gale-force winds have killed 22 people and left more than 60 injured after a sudden storm hit the north of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia this weekend.

More than 40 volunteers and staff from the Red Cross helped to evacuate hundreds of people from Gazi Baba municipality, the country’s capital Skopje and villages around Tetovo city. Families who had to leave their homes are staying in reception centres near Skopje.

• ERIKA continues moving north-west as a Tropical Storm. On 27 August, at 9.00 UTC, its centre was located between Grand Terre of Guadeloupe and the island of Antigua.
• Over the next 24h, ERIKA’s intensity may slightly increase, but will remain a Tropical Storm. Its centre is forecast to pass near or over portions of the Leeward Islands and the British Virgin Islands on 27 August and near or north of Puerto Rico early on 28 August UTC.

The heavy rainfall affected the western part of Macedonia in the late evening hours on 3 August 2015. The heavy rain resulted in the overflow of the water from the river Pena in the city of Tetovo. The heavy rains were disastrous for the mountain villages of Shipkovica (2,826 residents), Dzepciste (4,051 residents), Mala Rechica (8,353 residents), Golema Rechica (1,659 residents) and Poroj (2,677 residents) and the city of Tetovo (65,000 residents).

The most affected areas are Tetovo city and municipality, and surrounding areas. Many homes were damaged, several were evacuated. At least seven villages in the region lost road access because of mudslides, while the storm also caused bridges to collapse. The event claimed the lives of several people.
