Nonprofit Takes Urgent Action to Protect Migrant Children and Families Fleeing Violence in Central America

29 Jun 2018 description

US authorities must put an immediate end to both the separation and detention of children and families who come to the US border with Mexico seeking asylum, while also immediately reuniting the thousands of families who remain separated as a result of the Trump administration’s unlawful and damaging policies, said Amnesty International ahead of the Global Day of Action against these practices planned for 30 June.

Between 2014 and 2018, some 282,180 asylum claims have been lodged by Venezuelans, over 113,000 in 2017 alone. While refugee procedures are overwhelmed, 5,661 have been recognized as refugees thus far.

The majority of Venezuelans who have left their country have no regular status, and are therefore more vulnerable to any form of exploitation, abuse, violence, trafficking and discrimination.

Thousands continue leave Venezuela daily and legally enter in neighbouring countries. UNHCR is stepping up its response accordingly.

Legislation offers basis for a humane response for those seeking asylum

24 Jun 2018 description

Right now, as policies and procedures surrounding children separated from their families continue to evolve, a major concern has yet to be resolved: the plight of those thousands who remain removed from their parents. ChildFund International is deeply concerned about their wellbeing. We have been working with children and families on both sides of the border for decades, and will apply that unique expertise and insight to assist these children until they can be reunited.

U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order (EO) on June 20, entitled “Affording Congress an Opportunity to Address Family Separation.” In that executive order, the president announced an intention to alter the policy of separating adult asylum seekers from their children by incarcerating adults and children together while the adults are undergoing criminal prosecution.

As we mark World Refugee Day 2018 on June 20, governments confront humanitarian challenges of enormous proportion, with more than 68 million refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) around the world. The U.S. government has long played a key role in helping meet the needs of refugees and IDPs. Thus, it is appropriate and important that Refugees International (RI) evaluates and offers a report card on the Trump administration’s progress on refugee and humanitarian protection.

Today we commemorate World Refugee Day.

There are nearly 70 million people who have been forcibly displaced around the world as a result of persecution, conflict or generalized violence. Their precarious situation makes them more vulnerable. Many of these people have seen their most basic human rights violated.

Human decency demands that we protect them, aid them, help them. But so does international law. We must not forget that. And we must not allow others to forget it.

Migrantes y refugiados que huyen de sus países en Centroamérica se encontrarán más expuestos a la violencia en México con el endurecimiento de las políticas fronterizas de los Estados Unidos.

Migrants and refugees fleeing danger in Central America are trapped and exposed to more violence in Mexico due to ever tighter and more callous United States border control policies, said Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on World Refugee Day.

report Plan International

WASHINGTON (19 June) – Plan International is urging the U.S. administration to reverse its “zero tolerance” immigration policy and to end the practice of forcibly separating families at the U.S.-Mexico border, including the detention of children taken from their parents.

Such practices are reprehensible, regardless of migrants’ legal status, and are a direct violation of the legal rights of asylum seekers under U.S. law, as well as under treaties to which the U.S. is a ratified party.
