OVERVIEW

• Countries in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region experience a range of natural hazards, including droughts, earthquakes, floods, forest fires, hurricanes, landslides, tsunamis, and volcanoes. El Niño and La Niña phenomena occur periodically, exacerbating the impacts of hydrometeorological events in the LAC region. Unplanned urban expansion, environmental and natural resource degradation, and land-use management challenges also increase populations’ vulnerability and exposure to natural hazards.

Distinguished guests, it is a pleasure to be here with you today to discuss the important issue of how to apply lessons learned from recent urban search and rescue interventions following the Mexico Earthquake.

In the summer of 2017, Mexico was affected by an unprecedented number of natural hazards. Between August and September, the country bore the direct impact of seven tropical cyclones and two major earthquakes, affecting millions of people throughout the country.

As the search for survivors under the rubble in Mexico City and its surrounding areas continues, Télécoms Sans Frontières has commenced its route in the states of Morelos and Puebla to assist families and relief efforts.

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck near Mexico City on 19 September, causing damage and loss of life throughout Mexico City and the state of Morelos and Puebla.

National Civil Protection Protocols and the National Emergencies Committee have been activated. Urban search and rescue activities are still underway.

Measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale, Mexico's latest earthquake comes some 32 years to the day after the deadly quake of 1985. At present over 200 deaths have been reported, and considerable destruction observed across Mexico City and surrounding towns and villages.

A team from Télécoms Sans Frontières has been deployed in response to the disaster.

Estas unidades fortalecerán la prevención ante desastres

Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas.- Para fortalecer las acciones de prevención ante desastres naturales, el gobernador Manuel Velasco Coello entregó siete unidades vehiculares a la Secretaría de Protección Civil.

Desde las instalaciones de dicha Secretaría,el mandatario manifestó que estos vehículos servirán para la identificación y reducción de riesgos de desastres, capacitación y difusión entre los Comités de Prevención y Participación Ciudadana, atención de emergencias y entrega de ayuda humanitaria.
