OVERVIEW

  • Countries in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region experience a range of natural hazards, including droughts, earthquakes, floods, forest fires, hurricanes, landslides, tsunamis, and volcanoes. El Niño and La Niña, extreme phases of natural climate cycles, periodically exacerbate the impacts of hydrometeorological events in the LAC region. Unplanned urban expansion, environmental degradation, and poor land-use management also increase populations’ vulnerability to natural hazards.

A social epidemic that affects one in three women in the region

Violence against women affects one in three women in Latin America and the Caribbean, where this social epidemic carries an economic cost of between 1.6 percent and 6.4 percent of the gross domestic product of the countries of the region.

Therefore, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) reaffirms its commitment to continue working to eradicate this problem.

In the relocation program analyzed, implemented in response to severe flooding in 2007, the housing units built were granted to women.

6 December 2011 – Two United Nations agencies have strongly condemned the recent murder of a Mexican peace activist and the attempted killing of the chief of a women’s rights organization in the same country and called on the Government to investigate and prosecute those responsible.

Nepomuceno Moreno Núñez, a member of the Peace with Justice and Dignity Movement, was murdered on 28 November in the northern state of Sonora. He joined the movement after the disappearance of his son in July last year, demanding an investigation and punishment of the perpetrators.
