Tropical cyclone activity during the 2014 eastern North Pacific hurricane season was well above normal, and by several measures was the highest since the early 1990s. Of the 20 tropical storms that formed, 14 became hurricanes, and 8 reached major hurricane strength (category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale). The hurricane total was tied for the second highest on record for the basin, and the number of major hurricanes ties the previous record. For comparison, the 1981-2010 seasonal averages are 15 tropical storms, 8 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes.

Boris has strengthened into a tropical storm as it heads for the Pacific Ocean coast of Mexico. Boris is moving toward the north near 5 miles per hour and this general motion is expected for the next couple of days. Boris is expected to produce as much as 10 to 20 inches of rain over a large part of southern Mexico through Saturday, with isolated amounts exceeding 30 inches likely over the mountainous terrain of the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Chiapas. These rains are likely to result in life-threatening flash floods and mud slides.
