Description of the Situation

In November 2015, a group of more than 1,000 Cuban nationals were reported in the border area between Costa Rica and Panama in the community of Paso Canoas, Corredores Canton. Since these people did not meet the migration requirements to enter Costa Rica, a significant build-up of migrants occurred on the Panamanian side of the border as they began to settle in the streets, waiting on a solution to their legal immigration status.

Panama/Geneva, 20 September 2017 – Dozens of Mexican Red Cross teams have been working into the night, searching for survivors, ferrying injured to medical centres and providing on the spot first aid following yesterday’s deadly earthquake. The magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck central and southern Mexico killing more than 200 people, according to the government.

It registered at 8.1 degrees on the Richter scale. Red Cross’ auxiliary role allowed to set up collection centres and to coordinate restoring family links nationally.

The Situation


According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), an 8.1-magnitude earthquake on the Richter Scale struck off the Pacific Coast of Mexico--around 87km (54 miles) south-west of Pijijiapan--at 23:50 local time on Thursday,7 September 2017 (04:50 Greenwich Meant Time [GMT] Friday). A tsunami warning was issued for Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and Honduras; however, it was later lifted. An estimated 50 million Mexicans felt the tremor per the Mexican government.

The situation

Tropical Storm Franklin hit at 22:45 local time on Monday 7th (03:45 GMT Tuesday) near the town of Pulticub, in the south-eastern Mexican state of Quintana Roo, on the Yucatan Peninsula, according to the National Weather Service of Mexico (SMN for its Spanish acronym).

It does, however, continue to present a serious public health concern in the Americas, especially to the most vulnerable populations like women of childbearing age. To date, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has registered over 515,000 suspected Zika cases, of which more than 170,000 have been confirmed.

At its peak Hurricane Patricia was the strongest hurricane every recorded in the eastern Pacific packing maximum sustained wind speeds of an astonishing 320 kph. To put that into perspective, the Saffir-Simpson scale used to classify hurricanes defines anything above 250 kph as Category 5, or the highest rating at which “catastrophic damage” will occur.

Geneva/ Panama, 24 October 2015 – Hurricane Patricia was downgraded to a tropical depression and continues its passage on land northeast of Zacatecas, so in the coming hours it will cause heavy rains from 75 to 150 millimetres (mm) in Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas as reported by the Mexican Weather Service. The authorities recommend the public be aware of the heavy rains that will continue in the country.
