There are few countries in the world resilient enough to respond to a hurricane and the strongest earthquake in a century, accompanied by a tsunami threat, all within hours of each other. Such was the challenge that confronted Mexico last week.

CANCUN, Mexico, 30 May 2017 – Mexico's Cinemex, one of the world’s largest movie theatre groups, has scaled up a resilience campaign with its country's national disaster prevention authorities.

Announced during last week’s 2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction – hosted by the Mexican government in Cancun – the move marks a formal alliance between Cinemex and the National Center for the Prevention of Disasters, or CENAPRED, and the National Civil Protection department.

CANCUN, Mexico, 5 April 2017 - In a nation where tourism represents close to one-tenth of the economy, the issue of Mexico’s hotel trade’s resilience to natural hazards is top of the list.

It’s fitting that Cancun is hosting the 2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction next month, given that all 175 of the Caribbean resort’s hotels are built to withstand a category 3 hurricane.

MEXICO CITY, 22 March 2017 – Mexico City’s devastating, 8.1-magnitude earthquake of 1985 was a stark illustration of the disaster risks faced by the health sector, but it also triggered what became a global effort to protect hospitals from hazards.

After a tremor of 70 seconds, quake damage had reduced Mexico’s hospital capacity by 5,000 beds, sowing chaos in the emergency system at the precise moment that it was most need.

CANCUN, Mexico, 1 March 2017 – Mexico’s historical Maya civilisation created not only a written language and a binary mathematical system, but also a hurricane warning system that still works today.

It is housed in the clifftop Templo Dios del Viento, or Temple of the God of the Wind, in Tulum, a Maya site that had its heyday in the years 1200 to 1450.

The temple contains an intricate web of holes that cause an extremely loud whistling sound when early hurricane-force winds blow in from the Caribbean Sea towards Tulum.

En marzo de 2015 se llevó a cabo la Tercera Conferencia Mundial de las Naciones Unidas sobre la Reducción del Riesgo de Desastres, realizada en Sendai, Japón. En ella los Estados Miembros de las Naciones Unidas acordaron y adoptaron el Marco de Sendai para la Reducción del Riesgo de Desastres 2015-2030. Este marco es el principal instrumento orientador para la gestión del riesgo de desastres (GRD) en los países y tiene un renovado sentido de urgencia en el contexto del desarrollo sostenible y de la erradicación de la pobreza.

The Chiapas state government has pledged by then to have in place local plans for disaster risk reduction in all its 122 municipalities, thus meeting a key target of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction which was adopted in 2015 as an international blueprint for reducing disaster losses.

Mexico City, 6 May, 2016 - The President of Mexico, Mr. Enrique Peña Nieto, today re-committed his country to implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction as he paid tribute to the National System for Civil Protection on the 30th anniversary of its founding.
