As violence has worsened and poverty and inequality remain prevalent, the Central American governments of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, also known as the Northern Triangle, are doubly failing to protect their citizens: socioeconomic conditions remain poor and an increasingly violent environment permeates every corner of their countries, which causes people to flee in record numbers, but governments are failing to provide protection to those who are deported back to the same dangerous climates from which they ran.

GENEVA, April 5 (UNHCR) – The UN Refugee Agency today called for urgent action to help hundreds of people fleeing violence in Central America, which has surged to levels not seen since the region was wracked by armed conflicts in the 1980s.

"Action is urgently needed to ensure that unaccompanied children and others receive the protection to which they are entitled," UNHCR spokesperson Adrian Edwards told a press briefing in Geneva.

Everyday life for many Central American families is grim. Violence is rampant, the economic situation is bleak, and governments are grappling with corruption, weak institutions and overwhelming demand for basic services. As a result, many average Hondurans, Guatemalans and Salvadorans choose to make the long and dangerous journey to the United States as undocumented migrants in search of a better life.
