Situación actual del cólera en la Región

Cuba, no ha informado sobre la ocurrencia de nuevos casos desde el pasado 23 de agosto del 2013. El total de casos confirmados de cólera desde la semana epidemiológica (SE) 27 del 2012 hasta la SE 34 del 2013 es de 6781 incluyendo tres defunciones. Los casos se registraron en las provincias de Camagüey, Granma, Guantánamo, La Habana y Santiago de Cuba, así como también en otros municipios aunque todos ellos asociados a estas provincias.

MEXICO: HURRICANE NOEL FLOOD RECOVERY

UMCOR remains in contact with partners in the Dominican Republic and Mexico to assist them in the initial phase of recovery from damage caused by Hurricane Noel. UMCOR has issued emergency grants and long-term recovery plans are underway with Action by Churches Together partners-as they further assess the situation.

In the Dominican Republic, UMCOR is working with the Evangelical Dominican Church to provide the people with food, medication and other needed items.

UNITED NATIONS, New York - UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is appealing to international donors for $615,000 to step up its efforts to protect the reproductive health and safety of survivors of Tropical Storm Noel in the Dominican Republic.

The storm, which caused major flooding, landslides and the destruction of bridges when it swept across the Dominican Republic last week, has left more than 80 people dead and forced at least 65,000 from their homes.

NEW YORK, Nov. 8, 2007-Hurricane Noel's drenching rains wreaked havoc across the Caribbean and Mexico as sustained rains caused severe flooding across the Caribbean and Mexico. This deadliest storm of the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season left deep needs in its wake.

UMCOR continues to build its response to this wide-reaching disaster. Already, UMCOR has issued emergency grants to partners in the Dominican Republic and Mexico to assist them in their initial responses.

An amount of CHF 100,000 has been earmarked for emergency relief measures in each of the hard-hit countries of the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Mexico.

The humanitarian situation in the Dominican Republic has slightly improved thanks to the presently stabilized weather conditions. Up until 8 November, two members of the SDC's Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA) were on site to provide support to victims receiving no government assistance.

A total of 200,000 Swiss francs has been earmarked for emergency measures and ascertaining needs in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Mexico.

Since Saturday, a Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA) expert has been working with the UN and in coordination with local authorities, the Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and Switzerland's Consulate General in Santa Domingo on identifying requirements and initiating emergency measures where appropriate.

In Haiti, the SDC Cooperation Office in Port-au-Prince is in charge of this work.

Mexico floods

More than one million people's homes have been flooded, damaged or cut off by the rising waters, following week-long rains that have pushed rivers over their banks in the flood-devastated state of Tabasco on Mexico's southern Gulf coast.

About two-thirds of Tabasco is under water according to the state government, and 300,000 people are still trapped in their homes.

Following several days of torrential rains, including from the passage of Tropical Storm Noel (since upgraded to a hurricane), several countries in Central America and the Caribbean are facing severe floods, which have submerged entire villages and left thousands homeless and destitute. In some cases, such as in Mexico, these floods are the worst in decades.
