Mexico City (dpa) - A tropical storm continued to drift toward Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula early Thursday.

Tropical Storm Claudette churned through the central Caribbean overnight Wednesday, having already passed south of the island of Jamaica and likely to similarly miss Grand Cayman.

According to the Mexican weather service, the centre of the storm was still kilometres east of the peninsula, with wind speeds reaching 100 kilometres per hour. Tropical storm warnings were issued across Mexico's Caribbean coast.

July 9, 2003 - At 11 a.m. EDT, the center of Tropical Storm Claudette was located near latitude 15.5 north, longitude 77.6 west or about 175 miles south-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica. Claudette is moving toward the west near 24 mph. A gradual turn toward the west-northwest at a slower forward speed is expected during the next 24 hours, according to the NOAA National Hurricane Center in Miami, Fla.
