HURRICANE EARL BELIZE

Earl touched ground as a Category 1 hurricane on Thursday, 04 August.
Authorities distributed packages with food and water to the people affected, and also opened emergency shelters. Some 2,500 people were located in 94 emergency shelters, 164 are still sheltered. Earl affected 1,046 people in the departments of Quiché and Petén. 162 houses were reported with damages, and classes were suspended in the affected departments.

Earl tocó tierra como huracán categoría 1 (jueves 4 de agosto). Las autoridades distribuyeron paquetes de alimentos y agua entre los afectados. Unas 2,500 personas se refugiaron en 94 albergues temporales de emergencia, de estos 164 continúan en albergues.

GUATEMALA

Earl afectó a 1,046 personas en los departamentos de Quiché y Petén. Se reportaron 162 viviendas con daños, además de la suspensión de clases en los departamentos afectados.

EVENT: On Wednesday, August 3rd 2016, Hurricane Earl attained Category 1 status with winds of 75 mph. The initial projected path of Earl was due north of Belize City. Hurricane Earl made landfall early Thursday morning (August 4th) near Belize City as a Category 1 Hurricane with estimated maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. The track changed just before landfall, which occurred south of Belize City placing the city within the radius of maximum winds. The system took about fifteen hours to cross the country.

En la trayectoria se pronostica que Earl se mueve hacia el interior del estado mexicano de Veracruz en la tarde de hoy o esta noche. Vientos máximos sostenidos a 40 mph (65 km/h) con rachas superiores. Una advertencia de Tormenta Tropical está en efecto para Ciudad del Carmen hacia el oeste hasta Laguna Verde, en México.

  • TC EARL continued moving west-northwest over land, passing through central Belize and northern Guatemala and weakening into a Tropical Storm. On 5 August at 6.00 UTC its centre was located approx. 60 km south-southeast of Ciudad del Carmen (Campeche state, Mexico) and it had max. sustained wind speed of 65 km/h (Tropical Storm).

Situation

• TC EARL formed over the Caribbean Sea, south of Jamaica, on 2 August. It then started moving west, intensifying. On 4 August early morning (UTC), it made landfall near Belize city as a Hurricane Category 1. On 4 August at 9.00 UTC its centre was located approx. 75 km westsouthwest of Belize city (Belize) and it had max. sustained wind speed of 120 km/h (Hurricane Category 1).

• Over the next 24 h it is forecast to move west-northwest overland, weakening. Heavy rain and strong winds are expected to effect the areas along its path.
