Washington, D.C. – The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) expresses its concern at reports that a large number of Nicaraguans have been forced to travel to other countries in the region as a result of their political views and serious human rights violations that have taken place since the start of the April 2018 protests, as well as the activation of persecution and criminalization practices by the Nicaraguan state and other non-state actors, such as vigilante groups.

Many Latin American countries, states and cities are facing a chronic public security crisis. In spite of more than a decade of modest economic growth, crime and victimization rates are rising, not dropping. Nevertheless, recent information of 2017 show some signs of improvement. Criminal violence is routinely singled out as one of the top concerns of citizens from across Mexico, Central America and South America. And there are warning signs that the region ́s high rates of criminal violence and victimization will continue rising if nothing is done.

MANAGUA, Feb 15 2018 (IPS) - Nicaragua’s “containment wall”, aimed at bolstering internal security, has been successful with regard to the fight against transnational crime. But its victims are migrants who are relentlessly blocked from passing through the country en route to their destination: the United States.

A situation that also represents a paradox, given that Nicaragua is the Central American country with the largest number of nationals living abroad, second only to El Salvador.

La Cruz Roja de Nicaragua se encuentra atenta a brindar asistencia humanitaria a unos 1.600 cubanos que intentan ingresar al país desde Costa Rica, informó hoy una fuente de la institución.

"Estamos en comunicación con la Cruz Roja de Costa Rica. Si ellos ingresan y necesitan ser atendidos, en primeros auxilio, deshidratación o cualquier asistencia, estamos preparados", dijo a Acan-Efe una fuente de la institución de socorro.
