MEXICO CITY (AP) - Weakened by a trip across the Yucatan Peninsula, Tropical Storm Dolly gained new strength today as it rolled across the Gulf of Mexico toward northeastern Mexico.

"Further strengthening is likely and Dolly could become a hurricane during the next 24 hours," the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Maximum sustained winds were 50 mph at 8 a.m.

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Hurricane Douglas churned through the Pacific Ocean toward southern Mexico today after killing 35 people in a sweep across northern Colombia and Central America.

At 8 p.m. EDT on Monday, Douglas was 300 miles southeast of the resort of Acapulco. The U.S. National Weather Service said it was moving west at 20 miles an hour, with sustained winds of 80 mph and gusts of 97 mph.

Up to six inches of rain fell over parts of southern Mexico, creating the risk of flash floods and mudslides in mountainous regions.

1. DUE TO HEAVY RAINFALL FOLLOWING HURRICANE GERT (WHICH HIT EASTERN MEXICO 21 SEPTEMBER) PANUCO RIVER BASIN WAS FLOODED. ON 28 AND 29 SEPTEMBER, WATER LEVEL OF PANUCO RIVER ROSE TO AN EXTRAORDINARY LEVEL AND OVERFLOWED, INUNDATING APPROX. 200,000 HECTARES AND AGGRAVATING SITUATION.

1. ACCORDING TO LATEST LOCAL REPORTS, 20 PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND MORE THAN 1,000 MADE HOMELESS AFTER HEAVY RAINS PROVOKED MUDSLIDES AND THE COLLAPSE OF RICKETY HOMES IN NORTHERN CITY OF
TIJUANA, BORDERING CALIFORNIA, ON 7/8 JANUARY 1993. THOUSANDS MORE WERE LEFT WITHOUT ELECTRICITY OR POTABLE WATER. MOST AFFECTED AREAS WERE POOR NEIGHBOURHOODS WITH UNPAVED ROADS PERCHED ON STEEP SLOPES.

3. EPICENTER, LATITUDE 16.9 DEGREES NORTH, LONGITUDE 99.2 DEGREES WEST, LOCATED 65 KM EAST OF ACAPULCO, APPROX 320 KM SOUTH WEST OF MEXICO CITY.

4. PRELIMINARY SURVEYS INDICATED THAT APPARENTLY NO IMPORTANT DAMAGES CAUSED BY TREMORS.

1. A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE OF RICHTER MAGNITUDE 7.8 STRUCK MEXICO AT 1318 GMT TODAY. EPICENTRE LOCATED 17.8N 102.3W, I.E. 400 KM SOUTHWEST OF MEXICO CITY OFF PACIFIC COAST.

2. IN MEXICO CITY INTERNATIONAL TELEPHONE AND TELEX LINES CUT. FIRST ESTIMATES INDICATE THAT PERHAPS 35 PERCENT OF ALL BUILDINGS DAMAGED AND 30 SQUARE KM OF CENTRAL MEXICO CITY ALMOST TOTALLY DESTROYED. WIDESPREAD FIRES AND GAS LEAKS.
