WASHINGTON, May 8, 2018 — The great disasters of the past – like the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD or the hurricane that devastated Santo Domingo in 1930 – can provide valuable lessons to help governments and institutions increase the resilience of communities in the face of modern challenges, such as climate change and rapid urbanization.

OVERVIEW

• Countries in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region experience a range of natural hazards, including droughts, earthquakes, floods, forest fires, hurricanes, landslides, tsunamis, and volcanoes. El Niño and La Niña phenomena occur periodically, exacerbating the impacts of hydrometeorological events in the LAC region. Unplanned urban expansion, environmental and natural resource degradation, and land-use management challenges also increase populations’ vulnerability and exposure to natural hazards.

Between FY 2008 and FY 2017, USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/ OFDA) and USAID’s Office of Food for Peace (USAID/ FFP) provided humanitarian assistance in response to a diverse range of emergencies in the region.

  • On 7 September at 11:49 pm an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 on the Richter scale struck at the coast of Chiapas, which heavily affected neighbouring state Oaxaca and slightly affected other parts of the country, including Mexico City.

  • Based on the latest census of Chiapas and Oaxaca, an estimated 2,133,238 children, out of which 584,060 are under 5, live in the areas affected by the earthquake.

Tras el terremoto que se dio en México con una magnitud de 8,2 Mw, se extendió una alerta de tsunami para México, Ecuador y Centroamérica.

La advertencia fue emitida por el Centro de Alerta de Tsunamis del Pacífico, por este motivo, desde algunos minutos antes de la medianoche la Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) declaró una restricción costera.

Esto significa una suspensión de actividades acuáticas. “Que los bañistas y buceadores salgan del agua”, recalcaron, en especial en la Isla del Coco.

URGENTE: La Secretaría de Gestión de Riesgos, informa que, SE CANCELA la alerta de tsunami con base en el comunicado emitido por el Instituto Oceanográfico de la Armada. Las ondas de tsunami generadas por el terremoto suscitado en Chiapas, México a las 23h47 (hora México) ya han pasado y no persiste una amenaza mayor. Sin embargo, algunas costas todavía pueden experimentar pequeñas fluctuaciones del nivel del mar durante varias horas.

El terremoto de 8.4 grados en la escala de Richter que sacudió ayer México ha ocasionado alerta de tsunami en el litoral peruano, advirtió la Dirección de Hidrografía y Navegación de la Marina de Guerra del Perú.

Esta dependencia naval precisó que el epicentro del sismo de 8.2 grados, fue ubicado en las costas de Chiapas, en latitud 14.9 y longitud 94.0, a una profundidad de 69 kilómetros.

Un terremoto de magnitud 8,1 en la escala de Richter sacudió el territorio mexicano cerca de la medianoche del jueves provocando la muerte de al menos cinco personas y un número no determinado de casas y edificios dañados o derribados.

A diferencia de la magnitud establecida por el Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos, el presidente Enrique Peña dijo que el temblor fue de 8,2, lo cual lo convirtió en el mayor en al menos 100 años.

La Secretaría de Gestión de Riesgos, comunica que, de acuerdo con informe del Instituto Oceanográfico de la Armada, se emite una alerta de Tsunami debido al sismo ocurrido en México, comunicando que existe un peligro inminente de que se genere un tsunami en las Islas Galápagos. La amenaza para las costas de Ecuador está bajo evaluación.

Se insiste que el estado de alerta de tsunami es únicamente para las Islas Galápagos.
