Brussels, 15 December 2011 - The first results of the EU's Gender Action Plan, presented today at the European Development Days, show that it is already helping to improve the EU's work with women and girls around the world. The Plan presents a valuable picture of what is being done on the ground to improve gender equality, and what has been achieved so far.

6 December 2011 – Two United Nations agencies have strongly condemned the recent murder of a Mexican peace activist and the attempted killing of the chief of a women’s rights organization in the same country and called on the Government to investigate and prosecute those responsible.

Nepomuceno Moreno Núñez, a member of the Peace with Justice and Dignity Movement, was murdered on 28 November in the northern state of Sonora. He joined the movement after the disappearance of his son in July last year, demanding an investigation and punishment of the perpetrators.

Al año 2010, 12.3 millones de personas serían víctimas de trata en todo el mundo; más de la mitad son mujeres y niñas.3 Según estimaciones, la explotación de estas personas genera, anualmente, ganancias cercanas a los 32,000 millones de dólares para los tratantes, lo que coloca a esta actividad comercial ilícita en el tercer lugar entre las más lucrativas del mundo para el crimen organizado, después del tráfico de armas y del tráfico de estupefacientes.A pesar del alto número de personas que son explotadas en el mundo, muy pocas llegan a ser identificadas.
