The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are highly vulnerable to a range of natural hazards, including earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, landslides, volcanoes, and drought. In addition, disasters triggered by environmental and industrial incidents, such as forest fires and chemical and oil spills, pose a potential threat. At times, El Niño Southern Oscillation events and poor land use management exacerbate the effects of these hazards.

COSTA RICA: More than 5,400 people were affected by Tropical Storm Alma and losses are estimated at 33 million US dollars.

BELIZE: At least 7,193 persons have been affected and 5 people have died due to the floods caused by Tropical Storm Arthur.

EL SALVADOR: The government upgraded the alert from Green to Yellow due to the remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur.



On May 28th, a tropical wave developed south of Central America, and by late afternoon the system became the first tropical depression of the 2008 season.

Natural and weather related disasters are increasing in frequency. The countries in Central and South America and the Caribbean remain vulnerable to the impact of these natural and man-made disasters.

In 2006 and 2007, the Pan American Disaster Response Unit (PADRU) provided operational, logistics and preparedness support to the region's National Societies in response to 33 emergencies, in an effective and efficient manner according to the needs.
