Regional Overview

The regional forecasts now predict showers rather than heavy rains in the next few days. Through March 25, continued rains are forecast in Maputo and Gaza provinces, as well as in the central and northern parts of Mozambique. A cold front passing through Maputo could bring showers on March 17 and 18.

In the past 24 hours, 74 mm of rainfall was recorded in Save town. The Save river is above flood level, and flooding has been reported in low-lying areas.

From 1 December 1999 until 13 March 2000, a total of 15 173 cases of cholera with 860 deaths (case-fatality rate 5.7%) has been reported.
The epidemic is spreading and now affects six provinces: Toliary, Antananarivo, Antsiranana, Mahajanga, Toamasina and Fianarantsoa.

WHO is undertaking a mission to support the Ministry of Health in its efforts to respond to the epidemic.

Johannesburg/Antananarivo (dpa) - The United Nations Thursday delivered seven tons of emergency food aid to thousands of flood victims on the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar amid persistent downpours, aid officials said.

Supplies including sugar, rice and beans were dropped by parachute from a Transall plane to the town of Anosibe, southeast of the capital Antananarivo.

An estimated 11,000 Madagascans are in urgent need of food aid, U.N. World Food Programme representative Wagdi Othman said.

The island nation was struck by two tropical cyclones last month, causing flooding that wiped out crops and roads and destroyed homes. It is estimated that more than 600,000 people have been affected, with 12,000 people isolated by the flood waters and an additional 10,000 people left homeless.

Scattered thunderstorms are being reported from western Botswana into central Zambia and Tanzania. Zambia, Malawi, and the northern regions of Zimbabwe are also receiving rain. Flooding brought on by heavy rains in Malawi’s southern Chikwawa district has displaced at least 1,500 people.

ABIDJAN, 15 March 2000 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank has today approved a total of USD 1,500,000 for emergency relief assistance to Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Madagascar.

In February 2000, the three countries were hit by the worst floods in 50 years, which affected thousands of people and caused extensive damage to life and infrastructure such as roads, bridges, communication facilities, power lines and farms. Many of the affected areas are without access to safe drinking water, health care and other basic services.

ANTANANARIVO, March 15 (Reuters) - United Nations officials said on Wednesday they had enough relief supplies to help the victims of flooding in Madagascar but were having trouble getting them to villages most in need.

Although helicopters and small planes have been dropping supplies into towns around the country, moving them to scattered villages has been difficult because many roads are blocked by landslides or high water.

The South African Weather Bureau reports heavy cloud cover in southern Mozambique. This area is expected to receive rain until the end of this week.

The heaviest rainfall accumulation will remain in the Mozambique Channel east of Maputo. Rains in Mozambique, in addition to rains in neighboring countries, could increase the level of Limpopo River. The Umbeluzi basin in Maputo could also rise due to predicted rain in neighboring countries.
