Palanca – Over three million people crossing the Ukraine–Moldova border yearly will benefit from improvements to the Ukraine–Moldova border crossing point in Palanca (Moldova), which came on stream on 6 September.

Jointly operated by the border authorities of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, the new Contact Point ensures real time exchange of data on persons and vehicles crossing the border, alert lists, emergency situations, and other issues. The Contact Point was equipped and refurbished by IOM with EUR 60,000 funding from the European Union.

Summary of major revisions made to emergency plan of action:

A recommendation to conduct post-distribution monitoring to properly evaluate the implementation of operation was suggested after RDRT mission in Moldova in March 2019. The post-distribution monitoring will be done by Moldova Red Cross during week 2-3 of June 2019. The timeframe of the DREF operation is therefore extended by one month to implement the post-distribution monitoring mission. The operation is fully implemented. No new funds allocation is required.

Over 700 political violence and protest events spread across Romania, Moldova, and Belarus have been recorded in 2018 and since. Most of these events have been protests, and most have occurred without violence or intervention. While the highest number of protest events overall were recorded in Romania, the highest level of violence and intervention against protesters proportionally occurred in Belarus.

  • Natural hazards, such as droughts, earthquakes, floods, wildfires, and extreme winter weather, affect a range of countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia (EMCA). Protracted conflict and limited governmental disaster management capacity in many EMCA countries compound the risks associated with natural disasters. Furthermore, environmental degradation and rapid urban growth in some countries have led to overcrowding and settlement in hazard-prone areas.

This report presents the cross-regional, comparable findings of the OSCE-led Survey on the Well-being and Safety of Women, which was implemented in 2018 in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia, Moldova and Ukraine. The research was also conducted in Kosovo.
