19 February 2013 – The United Nations human rights office today expressed concern over the conviction of 25 Sahrawi civilians by a military court after they clashed with security forces in a protest camp near Laayoune, Western Sahara.

On 8 November 2010, Moroccan security forces moved to dismantle the Gdim Izik protest camp, which was set up by Sahrawis to protest their living conditions. The clashes resulted in the death of 11 members of the Moroccan security forces and two Sahrawis.

The United Nations envoy for Western Sahara announced today following three days of informal talks with the parties that he will embark on a regional tour starting in mid-May, including an extensive visit to the disputed territory. In addition, the next round of informal meetings will take place in Europe in June and in a place to be determined in July, according to a statement issued by Christopher Ross, the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara.

24 February 2012 – The next round of United Nations-backed informal talks aimed at reaching a settlement in the Western Sahara dispute will take place next month, the UN announced today.

Delegations from the parties to the dispute – Morocco and the Frente Polisario – and the neighbouring countries of Algeria and Mauritania will gather just outside New York for three days of discussions starting on 11 March.

With the desert locust situation continuing to improve in northwest Africa, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported today that a swarm invasion of the region is not expected this spring because breeding failed to occur in northern Mauritania during the winter.

Control operations are also in progress against immature swarms in Algeria and, to a much lesser extent, in Morocco, FAO noted in its latest update, showing more optimism than reports last year that warned of a potentially worse crisis than the last plague of 1987-89.

5 August 2004 -- With the summer season shaping up as vital in determining whether the locust infestation in West Africa turns into a plague, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is appealing to the global community for additional funds for massive national operations to control the crop-devouring insects.

"Donor support is urgently needed for targeted ground and aerial spraying and for environmental monitoring," the Rome-based agency said in a warning yesterday, the latest in a series it has issued over the past several months.
