In Syria, opposition forces launched a coordinated offensive in the capital Damascus for two consecutive days on 6 February. Heavy fighting was also reported in Deir Al-Zor, Daraya, Aleppo and Homs. The number of Syrian refugees continued to rise over the past week, amounting to a total of 792,118, an increase of around 59,000 newly registered refugees or individuals awaiting registration compared to last week.

KENYA: LIFE INCREASINGLY HOSTILE FOR SOMALIS

During January, approximately 1,200 people were arrested in a nationwide crackdown on 'irregular migrants' by the government, following demonstrations against the detention and subsequent deportation of a radical Islamist cleric, Abdullah al-Faisal.

According to the Refugee Consortium of Kenya (RCK), a JRS partner, arrested migrants, mainly ethnic Cushitic Ethiopians and Somalis, were charged with illegal presence and a lack of adequate documentation.

This paper puts the dramatic stories of some of those people alongside the latest science on the impacts of climate change on humans. Together they explain why climate change is fundamentally a development crisis.

It is my pleasure to present to you the 2008 Annual Report for the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

For the millions of people affected by natural disasters and conflict worldwide, 2008 was a year of enormous challenges. More than 211 million people were affected by natural disasters, with more than 238,000 killed and US$200 billion in damages, making 2008 one of the most devastating years in terms of human and material losses.
