Vienna, Austria, December 12, 2012. The Governing Board of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), meeting in its 141st Session, has approved 22 loans and grants totaling nearly US$300 million to boost socio-economic development in 23 partner countries. The bulk of the public sector loans will co-finance projects aimed at enhancing the transportation and energy sectors of the recipient countries, as well as the agriculture, education and health sectors.

On 9 July, the International Crisis Group (ICG) called for the suspension of joint UN-Congolese military action against the Rwandan rebel group, the FDLR.

WFP is currently feeding more than 14.5 million refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs) and returnees in some of the most dangerous and hard-to-reach parts of the globe.

In Pakistan, more than 2 million people have been displaced by fighting in the North West Frontier Province. In Sri Lanka, recent conflict has made more than 270,000 people homeless. And in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, more than 130,000 people have fled fighting in recent months.

In Darfur, about 2.5 million people were displaced by the conflict since 2003.

Kenya: influx of Congolese refugees in need of assistance According to JRS Kenya, many of the refugees arriving into Nairobi are in great need of assistance.

Under the new refugee act in the country, refugees in a position to take care of their financial and other needs are allowed to live outside the country's camps. Congolese refugees who wish to receive aid from the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) can only do so in Kakuma refugee camp in northwestern Kenya.

The mandate of the WHO departments specifically concerned with Emergency and Humanitarian Action in Crises is to increase the effectiveness of the WHO contribution to crisis preparedness and response, transition and recovery.

Executive Summary

President George W. Bush signed the Senator Paul Simon Water for the Poor Act of 2005 (the WfP Act) into law on December 1, 2005. The Act requires the Secretary of State, in consultation with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and other U.S. Government agencies, to develop and implement a strategy "to provide affordable and equitable access to safe water and sanitation in developing countries" within the context of sound water resources management.

NEW YORK, 21 December (IRIN) - The high-level conference on the expanded United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) held in New York on 7 December was significant for two reasons: it was well attended, and the response was unprecedented, with 51 donors - including 16 new ones - pledging US $345 million for 2007.

Some donors were not yet able to confirm their contributions, while the United Kingdom, Sweden and Norway, promised multi-annual funds.
