JOHANNESBOURG, 26 novembre 2012 (IRIN) - Les crises de réfugiés semblent commencer et se terminer. En 2011, tous les yeux étaient tournés vers le complexe de réfugiés de Dadaab, dans le nord du Kenya, alors qu’il accueillait des centaines de milliers de Somaliens qui fuyaient la famine et le conflit. Cette année, c’est l’exode des réfugiés syriens qui a attiré l’attention du public, même si la majorité des Somaliens qui sont arrivés à Dadaab l’an dernier y sont toujours.

In 2011, all eyes were on the Dadaab refugee complex in northern Kenya as it received hundreds of thousands of Somalis fleeing famine and conflict. This year, attention has shifted to the refugee exodus from Syria, even though the majority of Somalis who arrived at Dadaab last year are still there.

CHAD: INSECURITY HINDERS THE MOBILITY OF HUMANITARIAN AGENCIES

According to JRS Chad, growing insecurity is hindering the delivery of humanitarian aid and services to refugees and internally displaced persons in the east of the country.

Since the clashes between rebels and government troops at the beginning of May, armed banditry has been on the rise.

In the past two weeks, JRS and partners have been the victims of robberies on two occasions. First, JRS staff were held up near Guereda and their vehicle was taken.

KENYA: THOUSANDS OF REFUGEES TO BE TRANSFERRED

On 5 February, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) announced its latest plan to transfer thousands of refugees to Kakuma camp.

According to UNHCR, the ongoing arrival of Somalis into the three Dadaab camps in northeastern Kenya has stretched resources beyond acceptable limits.

The population of the three camps is estimated at 250,000, nearly three times the number it was originally established to house.

WFP completed March general food distributions for the Sudanese refugees in all 12 refugee camps. Over the past week, a total of 1,272 new refugees from Sudan have been transferred to the Kounoungou refugee camp in the Guereda area.

Post-election violence in Kenya escalated, increasingly along ethnic lines. Over 900 have reportedly been killed since the 27 December presidential poll. At the same time, mediation efforts led by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan gathered momentum.

In Chad, 300 rebel vehicles under apparent unified command advanced towards N'Djamena at the end of the month.

WASHINGTON, DC - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) on Friday welcomed major US government contributions for August totaling US$69 million, aimed at feeding people in seven countries confronting humanitarian challenges ranging from severe drought to civil conflict.

The latest donations, from the US Agency for International Development (USAID), bring total American contributions to WFP operations for the fiscal year to US$905 million. The United States is WFP's single largest donor.
