UNHCR supports the Tunisian government’s continued efforts towards saving lives through rescue at sea, as well as its humanitarian response for permitting disembarkation in Tunisia.

Intensifying clashes in the southern Libyan town of Murzuq involving air and drone strikes in recent days have left at least 90 people dead and displaced thousands of “terrified” civilians, the UN said on Tuesday.

“Casualties on all sides of the fighting have continued as a result of airstrikes by planes and drones, indiscriminate rocket attacks and shelling, and direct fighting on the ground,” said Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

  • The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate as a direct result of the armed conflict. Access to food and markets as well as availability of electricity and health services is increasingly restricted. General lawlessness in frontline areas, including the looting of IDPs’ homes, is reportedly on the rise.

  • According to UNHCR, the Libyan Red Crescent successfully evacuated more than 50 individuals from conflict areas in the past 24 hours

• 15 international nurses from the Philippines located safely, following evacuation of Ali Omar Askar hospital in Espeaa on 28 April, due to fighting.

  • Airstrikes indiscriminately impact residential areas, with one child killed and three children injured in airstrikes during past four days, according to Health Sector partners.

  • Armed conflict continues to impact health facilities and personnel, as shelling damages a hospital in Espeaa, south of Tripoli on 28 April, leading to temporary evacuation and disruption of health services. Corroborated reports have also been received that a health worker was killed in airstrikes on the night of 29-30 April.

  • Indiscriminate shelling and airstrikes on residential areas continues, in violation of international humanitarian law, with unconfirmed reports of civilian casualties and material damages reported in Al Hadhba area of Abusliem municipality on the night of 25-26 April and in Ain Zara and Al Twaisha areas of Tripoli on the night of 27-28 April.

HIGHLIGHTS

• On 24 April, UNHCR and IOM evacuated 328 refugees and migrants from the Qasr bin Ghashir detention centre (DC).
The transfer was conducted after 12 individuals were injured when an armed group entered the DC the previous day. The relocation was carried out with support from the Libyan authorities, UNSMIL and OCHA, who facilitated a humanitarian corridor to make the transfer possible.
