OVERVIEW

CONTEXT

The 26th round of DTM data collection in Libya took place between 13 June and 04 August 2019. DTM identified at least 655,144 migrants currently present in Libya who originated from more than 39 countries. Migrants were identified in all 100 municipalities, within 559 communities.
Throughout the reporting period, the armed conflict in South Tripoli which started on 04 April 2019 continued with substantial impact on the situation of migrants in and surrounding conflict-affected areas.

Since DTM’s last update on 20 August 2019, an additional 1,450 internally displaced families (approximately 7,250 individuals) were identified, bringing the total number of internally displaced persons from Murzuq to at least 3,340 families (approximately 16,700 individuals) since the beginning of August. Reportedly, at least 620 migrants have also been displaced, most of them from Niger, Mali, Chad and Nigeria.

Since the last update of IOM Libya’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) on 11 August 2019, the security situation in Murzuq reportedly remained volatile. DTM identified an additional 525 internally displaced families (approximately 2,625 individuals) since the previous report, bringing the total number of internally displaced persons from Murzuq to at least 1,285 families (approximately 6,425 individuals) who have been forced to leave their homes due to armed conflict since the beginning of August.

09 Aug 2019 description

Following the escalation of the security situation in Murzuq in the first week of August, at least 430 families (approximately 2,150 individuals) have been displaced in the last 72 hours to Sebha, Ubari, Wadi Etba, Al Gatroun and safer neighborhoods in Murzuq. Reported hostilities included airstrikes in areas inhabited by civilians, particularly in Disa neighborhood in Murzuq City. According to initial reports, over 75 people have been killed in the last days and many more injured.

DTM Displacement event tracking in Libya covers all the events related to population movements during one month. In June 2019, events related to displacements and population movements were recorded in 17 Muncipalities (Baladiyas) all over the country.

Since the onset of armed conflict in the southern areas of Tripoli on 04 April 2019, a significant number of people have been affected by the conflict. As per the most recent flash update published by IOM Libya’s Displacement Tracking Matrix, at least 20,975 families (approximately 104,875 individuals) were identified as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Furthermore, the conflict has also affected migrants and refugees held in the detention centers as well as those in urban locations.

OVERVIEW

This report presents the findings of round 25 of the mobility tracking component of the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) programme in Libya, covering the reporting period 01 April until 31 May 2019.

In April and May 2019, the number of IDPs identified in Libya increased substantially from 172,541 IDPs to 268,629 by the end of round 25. New displacements during the reporting period were primarily due to the escalation of hostilities in South Tripoli and related population movements.

Following heavy rainfall in early June, Ghat and surrounding areas were heavily affected by floods, with water levels reaching up to two meters in affected areas. Subsequently, over 5,075 people were displaced from flood-impacted areas, including around 450 migrants from Niger, Mali, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mauritania and Sudan.
