UNREST FORCES 7,000 TO FLEE TO NIGERIA

More than 7,000 people have fled Cameroon’s crisis-hit English-speaking regions to neighbouring Nigeria since October. UNHCR and Nigeria’s refugee commission have registered 5,200 in Cross River and Taraba states. Around 2,000 others are awaiting registration. Cameroonian security forces recently launched a crackdown against a separatist movement in the NorthWest and South-West regions where protests erupted last year over alleged Government marginalisation.

L'assistance alimentaire, la protection civile et l'éducation sont les besoins humanitaires urgents. Une organisation humanitaire a déjà envoyé des approvisionnements médicaux à la ville où une alerte de potentielle crise nutritionnelle a été lancée.

ATTACKS CLAIM 10 LIVES IN CRISIS-HIT REGION

At least 10 people were killed on 7 and 10 December in the South-West region, which along with the North-West, have been gripped by protests and violence against alleged Government marginalisation. More than 5,000 people have already fled to neighbouring Nigeria. There are fears that the figure could rise with the escalating tensions.

FAYA, Chad, April 18 (UNHCR) – Thousands of Chadians have returned to northern Chad after fleeing the unrest in neighbouring Libya and braving a long journey through one of the most hostile terrains on earth.

The UN refugee agency has registered more than 4,500 Chadians who arrived in Faya in northern Chad since March 28. Authorities who control the border post believe that up to 8,000 people have passed through this oasis town in the last month. Some 300 are still arriving every day, and thousands more are believed to be on their way.
