Highlights

  • Since January 2019, 35,400 refugees and migrants (one in four of whom children) arrived through the Mediterranean migration routes. The majority of the children were registered in Greece, bringing the number of refugee and migrant children present in this country to 32,000- a 52 per cent increase since the start of the year.

In May, 6,300 refugees and migrants arrived to Europe, primarily via Greece, Spain and Italy. Overall arrivals to Greece increased marginally compared with the previous month (3,198 versus 3,020), while arrivals to Spain (1,928 versus 1,539) increased by 20% and those to Italy rose (255 versus 782). So far this year just over 27,800 refugees and migrants arrived to Europe via the three Mediterranean routes compared to 43,569 that arrived in the same period last year, marking a 36% decrease.

April saw an increased number of refugees and migrants in UnaSana Canton (USC) and in particular of unaccompanied and separated children and families.

134 refugee and migrant children, from House of All, the Žene sa Une safe house, and the Sedra,
Borići, Ušivak, and Bira TRCs were enrolled in primary education.
IOM opened the Borići TRC on 3 January and the first 136 refugees and migrants moved in. The Borići TRC is predominantly for families with children.
Health care services in the Ušivak TRC are now provided by the Sarajevo Cantonal Health Institute through the Hadžići Primary Health Centre, with the support of DRC.

ARRIVAL TRENDS AND FIGURES

Between 1 January and 30 November, 131,100 refugees and migrants reached Europe via the three Mediterranean routes compared to almost 171,430 arrivals in the same period in 2017. This marks a 25% reduction from the previous year’s arrival figures, showing a continued declining trend of the overall arrivals numbers to Europe. After a spike in October, arrivals dropped in November with over 10,080 people reaching Europe.

According to available data from national authorities and IOM offices, a total of 133,489 migrants and refugees arrived in Europe between January and November 2018, 25 per cent decrease compared to the 178,232 reported in the same period 2017. 30,951 migrants and refugees were registered on entry and exit in Bosnia and Herzegovina (23,271), Albania (3,280) and Montenegro (4,400) in 2018, fourteen times more than the 2,199 registered in the same period last year.
