Geneva – IOM reports that 63,417 migrants and refugees have entered Europe by sea through 18 September, roughly a 20 per cent decrease from the 78,372 arriving during a similar period last year.

Arrivals this year to Greece and Spain are at 32,767 and 16,894, respectively (49,661 combined), accounting for about 78 per cent of the regional total, with the balance arriving in much smaller numbers to Italy, Malta and Cyprus. Arrivals to Greece are running almost 50 per cent ahead of 2018’s totals from this time. Arrivals to Spain are almost 50 per cent lower.

Geneva - A Sudanese Migrant died from a bullet wound Thursday, hours after being returned to shore by the Libyan Coast Guard. The International Organization for Migration (IOM), whose staff witnessed the tragedy, strongly condemns the migrant's death.

The tragedy occurred at Abusitta Disembarkation point in Tripoli as many of the 103 migrants returned to shore were resisting being sent back to detention centers. IOM staff who were on the scene to provide aid to migrants report that armed men began shooting in the air when several migrants tried to run away from their guards.

WFP provides capacity-strengthening activities aimed at enhancing the Government-run National School Feeding Programme (NSFP) that reaches 260,000 children (125,000 girls and 135,000 boys) in 2,500 primary schools.

The budget for national school feeding doubled in 2019, reaching USD 16 million per year. USD 1.7 million were provided by the Tunisian Government for the construction and equipment of a pilot central kitchen and development of a School Food Bank.

In Mali, Flow Monitoring Points are set up at key transit locations across the country (Gao, Timbuktu, Kidal, Menaka, Mopti, Kayes, Segou, Sikasso and Bamako) to monitor the movements of travelers coming from and headed to other countries in West and North Africa. In August 2019, the average daily number of individuals observed at the Flow Monitoring Points (233) increased by 28 per cent compared to the previous month. Nationals from Mali, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Burkina Faso accounted for 71 per cent of all the migrants recorded at the flow monitoring points.

19 September 2019, Rome - Some 41 countries continue to be in need of external assistance for food, with conflicts acting as the primary cause of high levels of food insecurity and adverse weather conditions - particularly rainfall shortages in Africa - acutely affecting food availability and access for millions of people, a quarterly report by the United Nations says.

The Finnish authorities select the quota refugees to be admitted to Finland on the basis of a submission by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

This figure includes Voluntary Repatriation from Kenya (84,558) and Assisted Spontaneous returnees from Yemen (4,414) as well as 1,395 returnees from other countries such as Djibouti (801), Libya (406), Sudan (143), Eritrea (34), Angola, Tunisia, Gambia, Pakistan, Cambodia and others. Somali refugees from these or other countries who return spontaneously without assistance from the UNHCR are not included.
