Between August and October this year, the Peace and Security Council (PSC) held meetings on Libya, Lesotho, Guinea-Bissau, South Sudan, Burundi, the Central African Republic (CAR), Darfur and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Very few new initiatives, however, were launched. In some cases, such as Burundi, the PSC again called for action by the region – in this instance, the East African Community (EAC) – and in others, such as the CAR, it expressed support for the African Union (AU) initiative in the country.

OVERVIEW

Ras Ajdir, alternatively named Ras Jdir or Ras Ejder, is the main and most used border crossing between Tunisia (Ben Gardane-Medenine governorate) and Libya (Nuqat al Khams district), and Libya's most northerly point (GPS coord: 33.1481°N 11.5663°E).

The nearest towns are Zarzis, 78 km from the border on the Tunisian side, and Zwarah, 60 km on the Libyan side.

This border is widely used for the transport of humanitarian commodities and commercial shipments between Tunisia and Libya.

World Health Organization (WHO) has concluded a week-long comprehensive training on Tuberculosis (TB) case management in Libya, this workshop was held in Tunisia The first-ever training since the war flared-up in Libya focused on diagnosis, drug management, reporting, and patient tracking. 25 trainees from all TB centers of National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) across Libya under the umbrella of National TB Program (NTP) attended the course. The training was facilitated by Manager of NTP Tunisia along with senior experts in the diagnosis, case management and treatment of TB.

On 7 November, UNHCR resettled 44 refugees from Libya to Italy. With the assistance of IOM, the UN Migration Agency, the resettled individuals departed from Tripoli to Rome, despite intermittent skirmishes near Mitiga airport the night before.

Libya – The UN Migration Agency, IOM, resumed its Voluntary Humanitarian Return Programme (VHR) in Libya’s southern city of Sebha yesterday (08/11). VHR provides support to stranded migrants wishing to return to their home countries. In recent months, IOM has been expanding its outreach in the south through multiple field missions to make VHR operations possible.

In October, 71,000 new displacements were monitored by the UNHCR-led PRMN, a slight increase compared to last months.
Half of the internally displaced came to Banadir from Lower Shabelle due to conflict.
In 2018 so far, PRMN has monitored 831,000 internal displacements due to conflicts, floods and drought. As of 31 August, there are estimated to be 2.6 million internally displaced people in Somalia.
As of October 2018, UNHCR registered 32,261 refugees and asylum seekers in Somalia. Most people seeking asylum in Somalia are from Ethiopia and Yemen.
